In case gun-toting bears weren’t evidence enough of the crime-fighting power of urban greening, MotherJones reports that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now studying the phenomenon as a weapon against violence. But Emily Schiffer and Alex Kotlowitz’s gorgeous photo-essay about farming in Chicago’s poorest neighborhoods also makes clear that it is a powerful weapon against despair, transforming not only the urban landscape but the social fabric of impoverished communities.
