As reported by the Baltimore Sun, Whitelock Community Farm has teamed up with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the city’s health department to provide vegetables to a local corner grocery store. The effort is part of a pilot program to address the barriers to access to affordable, healthy food in low-income neighborhoods. The partnership with Linden Market kicked off officially last Thursday. This will be an interesting experiment to see not only if produce grown on urban farms can be made available to community residents in an affordable, scalable way, but also whether the food desert of the mind – where people reach by habit for processed sugar bombs and salty snacks over nutrient-rich fruit and vegetables – can be effectively transformed.
